The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley
Week of August 18, 2025
Welcome to the new school year! We are SO happy you are here!
It’s just SO MUCH better when the students and staff are here!! Happy 1st week of school, HMS!!
We truly believe in this sentiment, and it shows: "No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship." ~James Comer
School is off to a great start! Relationship building and time together, in all of our classes. During the first two days of school, 6th graders enjoy tours and orientation activities to help them feel welcomed and comfortable at HMS!
All smiles at lunch! Such a great time to take a breath, and connect with friends.
Thanks to our amazing HS Explorers for their Chalk the Walk project! Such a fun way to welcome our students!
Language Arts students are already visiting the media center to get inspired about reading! We love Mrs. Kingan and her positive energy!!
When science meets flight… 8th grader Science students made paper airplanes, then measured, tested, and flew their way through the Scientific Method!
“You have the most amazing school and staff!” “My child comes home happy every day!” “These teachers love kids.” “This was an amazing night!” Thank you teachers and parents/guardians for an outstanding 7th grade Open House tonight!
Important Notes:
HMS Announcements - Please feel free to visit this site daily for up-to-date announcements for our students and school!
Make-Up Picture Day: Make-up Picture Day will be held during the school day on Tuesday, August 25. Orders for school pictures can be placed using this link, which is open through September 2. If your child already had their photo taken at Registration, and you haven’t yet ordered pictures, please feel free to do so using this same link.
Open House Nights:
- We look forward to meeting our parents/guardians at our upcoming HMS Open House nights (thanks to 7th grade parents who attended this week!):
- 6th Grade Open House: Tuesday, August 26, 6:00-7:30pm
- 8th Grade Open House: Tuesday, September 2, 6:00-7:45pm
- Check out the links for the evening’s schedule and detailed information. Please bring the schedule template with you, or take a photo, so you know just where to go throughout the event.
- PLEASE NOTE: This is a different format than the K-5 Open House nights. In grades 6-12, our Open House format is designed to allow parents to walk through their child’s schedule to learn from each teacher about the course and curriculum.
- Because our Open Houses are very well attended by parents/guardians, students do not typically attend.
Dress Code Reminder:
- We appreciate your help and support, ensuring that our students follow our school dress code. We shared the dress code with students on Wednesday and will be asking that they follow it moving forward. A few specific items to note:
- School dress should be similar to what would be appropriate for an informal workplace or place of business.
- Shorts or skirts should be an appropriate length.
- Clothing must cover undergarments, midriff and private areas.
Chromebook Insurance - by September 6:
- The enrollment window for Chromebook insurance is open and available through September 5, 2025 at the cost of $20.
- To enroll and learn more, please visit our district Technology website.
Positive Expectations Assembly/Presentation:
- We held grade-level assemblies on Tuesday and Wednesday to share our positive expectations with students.
- Check out our Student Positive Expectations Presentation!
- During the assembly, we introduced the idea of a 20-ft circle of influence. How do you want others to feel when they're in your 20-ft circle? Uplifted? Positive? Like they belong? That's our goal at HMS!
HMS Lunch Aide Position Available:
- Perfect lunch-time hours! Outstanding people!
- We have an HMS lunch aide position available. The role is part-time daily from 10:30am - 1:00pm.
- This is such an important part of our students’ day, and we are truly appreciative of the individuals who support them during lunch.
- If you know of anyone who might consider this role, please reach out to them to share about this opportunity. You may know a retired friend, a recent graduate, or someone thinking about re-entering the workforce. Thank you so much for helping to spread the news.
- Anyone interested can apply via our district website under Job ID 2754 (Educational Aide/Lunch at the Middle School).
- We also are always looking for substitutes, for those who need a little more flexibility.
