The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

Week of September 29, 2025

We kicked off Kindness Month with an optional Kindness Pledge! So many students participated with a focus on spreading kindness in our building and community!

Photo Shoot Friday! Be the I in KIND!!

One of our communities is completing their own secret Kindness Month mission! Inspired by their LA novel, Stargirl, and the random acts of kindness in the story….students are writing anonymous kindness messages for EVERY 7th grader. LOVE this!!

In 8th grade Science, students are exploring patterns of inheritance and putting their new vocabulary to the test by creating their very own (and totally adorable!) critters!

Wednesday was World SMILE Day! A HUGE THANK YOU to our 8th grade Band for kicking off our day with a smile...greeting our students with music and ENERGY! And thank you to our amazing band directors, Mr. Rodesh and Mr. Burrington!

Interested in Serving as a Substitute? Our district is actively looking for substitute teachers and staff members to help support our students. If you’ve ever considered stepping into our schools, this is a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of students and support our community. Even a day or two of your time can have a big impact. We’d love for you to consider joining us - our students (and staff!) would truly appreciate your help!

Important Notes:

HMS Kindness Month / Bullying Prevention Month in October:

  • October is Bullying Prevention Month, and we are focused on supporting our students to prevent bullying.
  • Our goals include:
    • Learn about Bullying Prevention (that we CAN make a difference!)
    • Spread kindness, inclusion, and acceptance
    • Promote a sense of belonging for all of our students
  • Throughout the entire school year, our conversations center on kindness and belonging, and counteracting and preventing bullying.

Panorama Survey - 10/31 during FOCUS:

  • On September 26, communication was sent by Jennifer Reece to families of students in grades 3-12 about our upcoming Fall Panorama Survey. Information from this survey provides us with valuable information about the effectiveness of our programming, helps us to create additional learning opportunities, and guides us in creating safe and supportive learning environments.
  • At HMS, we will be administering the survey during FOCUS on October 31.
  • If you would like to opt your child out of the survey, but have not yet notified me this school year and received a reply, please email Kim Cockley, HMS Principal, via email at cockleyk@hudson.k12.oh.us by October 9. We appreciate you letting us know annually, because preferences and situations sometimes change. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Student Fees - in PaySchools:

  • HMS and HHS school fees and athletic/activity fees are available for parents/guardians to pay in PaySchools.
  • Thank you for visiting this site to pay fees: https://www.payschoolscentral.com/

Parent/Teacher Conferences 10/8 and 10/9:

  • HMS Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, October 8, from 4:30pm – 8:00pm and Thursday, October 9, from 10:00pm - 7:00pm.
  • As a reminder, there will be no school on Thursday, October 9 (for PreK-8) or Friday, October 10 for all grades.
  • If your child’s teaching team requested a conference, you were already contacted directly to schedule a time.
  • If you were not contacted by your child's teachers, please know that a conference is not required at this time. If you would still like to schedule a conference, however, we absolutely welcome you in to meet with your child’s team of teachers.
