The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley
Week of May 18, 2026

The halls of HMS were filled with cheers, smiles, and memories as we welcomed the Class of 2026 for our district’s first-ever Senior Walk-Through! Our middle school students and staff were proud to celebrate these graduates and be reminded that their own futures are full of possibility.

These Language Arts students wowed peers and staff with their Passion Projects! After researching topics they truly care about, students shared creative action steps and inspiring ways to make a difference!

Our 6th graders brought the energy to the Vocabulary Powerball Competition! Teams faced off in exciting preliminary rounds, putting their vocabulary skills from the whole year to the test with lots of teamwork, cheering, and fun along the way.

Our Kindness board has grown throughout the year! We love this opportunity to highlight our students who are making a positive difference in our school - which are also shared on morning announcements to spread kindness at HMS!

Health students had the opportunity to learn from our School Resource Officers through hands-on activities using impairment simulation goggles and pedal cars to better understand how impaired driving affects judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Experiences like these help students make safe, informed decisions and recognize the real-life dangers of driving under the influence.

Thank you to visiting HS teachers and HS students for sharing with our 8th grade students all about H2BE and Honors English! Our students are looking forward to high school!

STEM Career Day! A HUGE THANK YOU to our incredible community and parent guest presenters, who volunteered their time to share about STEM in their careers with our 6th grade students!

Students can pick up their own emergency medication, such as inhalers and epi-pens, from the clinic at the end of the day on May 29th. Parents will need to pick up their student’s daily medications. Any prescription medication not picked up by May 29th at 4:00pm will be locked in a safe and inaccessible until Open House in the fall. Please see the link below to access any forms needed for medication drop off. Prescription medications should be brought in in the original bottle, require a doctor's signature and parent’s signature, state the dose, timing and frequency the medication is to be taken. No more than 30 days of medication should be brought in at a time. Forms and medication should arrive together. Please make sure medication is not expired. A Reminder from our District's Nutrition Services Department:
- As we near the end of the year, we want to share a quick reminder about lunch accounts: If a lunch balance is negative, students will only be able to purchase a school breakfast or lunch until the balance is paid.
- Items other than the published menu for our school breakfast or lunch are unable to be purchased with a negative account balance.
- Parents/guardians, if you need assistance, please let our Nutrition Services department know.
- Any positive funds remaining on the account will automatically transfer to next year.
Thank you for your understanding and thank you to our amazing kitchen staff who take such great care of all of us every day!
HMS Dress Code for 2026-27 School Year:
The HMS student handbook outlines the Dress Code Policy as follows:
The following are meant to be guidelines of appropriate dress for school and to contribute to the positive atmosphere at our school. They are not intended to be comprehensive. When considering clothing for school, dress for a place of learning. Think about whether it is something you would wear to a family restaurant, retail store, or doctor’s office. The final decision about any dress code violation will rest with the building principals.
Allowable Dress & Grooming
•School dress and grooming should be appropriate for a place of learning.
•Clothing must be opaque (not see-through).
•Clothing must fully cover the stomach, back, chest, and private areas. As examples, cropped shirts, muscle shirts, spaghetti strap shirts, and racerback shirts are not permitted.
•Proper undergarments must be worn and should not be visible.
•Shorts and skirts must be worn at a length that provides appropriate coverage at all times.
•Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, and other activities where unique hazards exist.
•Special permission must be granted by Administration for hats, bandannas, costumes, etc. to be worn during the school day.
