The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

Week of April 27, 2026

This past Saturday, many HMS students attended the Goodyear STEM Career Day! This event brought STEM learning to life through hands-on activities and engaging speaker sessions. Students had the chance to explore real-world career pathways and were inspired to think about their own futures in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. And, THANK YOU to our amazing HMS PTO for providing the transportation to this event!

During the Culture Fair at East Woods Intermediate on Portrait of an Explorer Day, some of our amazing 8th grade students led interactive stations, guiding younger students as they discovered and celebrated cultures from around the world!

Our HMS Book Club attended the annual KSU Reading and Writing Festival this week, participating in workshops and learning from authors! Incredible experience! Two of our students earned awards at this event: Maddie earned 1st place in journalism writing (pictured here with Mrs. Stanchina from our Six District Compact)! And Jack's art design was selected for next year's 2027 logo/cover design! Way to go!! Thank you so much to our amazing HMS PTO for providing the transportation to this event!

As students dive into the mystery of The Westing Game in Language Arts, they step into detective mode with a lively game of Clue - putting their sleuthing skills to the test and bringing the story’s intrigue to life!

One of our Service Learning students designed and taught a sensory activity, and led students in making personalized bracelets. So fun to see our students engaging with each other in activities!

Important Notes:

It’s Staff Appreciation Week!

  • We have the most amazing middle school staff ever!! This week is all about celebrating them and their care for our students!
  • Thanks to our HMS Student Council and our HMS PTO for some fun surprises throughout the week including a Staff Luncheon where our staff can just be together and enjoy some food and friendship - a much-deserved thank you for them!
  • Special thanks to YOU, our incredible HMS families, for providing the funding for the Coffee Truck through Travelin’ Tom’s Send a Sip donation program!!! Our staff can’t thank you enough!

A Reminder from our District's Nutrition Services Department:

  • As we near the end of the year, we want to share a quick reminder about lunch accounts: If a lunch balance is negative, students will only be able to purchase a school breakfast or lunch until the balance is paid.
  • Items other than the published menu for our school breakfast or lunch are unable to be purchased with a negative account balance.
  • Parents/guardians, if you need assistance, please let our Nutrition Services department know.
  • Any positive funds remaining on the account will automatically transfer to next year.

Thank you for your understanding and thank you to our amazing kitchen staff who take such great care of all of us every day!

  • Perfect lunch-time hours! Outstanding people!
  • We have an HMS lunch aide sub position available, likely through the end of the school year. The role is part-time daily from 10:30am - 1:00pm.
  • Even if you can’t work daily, we’d love to have you for any combination of days throughout the week :-)
  • This is such an important part of our students’ day, and we are truly appreciative of the individuals who support them during lunch.
  • If you know of anyone who might consider this role, please reach out to them to share about this opportunity. You may know a retired friend, a recent graduate, or someone thinking about re-entering the workforce. Thank you so much for helping to spread the news.
