The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

Week of March 9, 2026

We love these connections - HMS students and our youngest Explorers! On this week’s Portrait of an Explorer Day, one of our 7th grade teams walked to McDowell to read a story about planting seeds to see growth and watch life blossom, then they planted sunflower seeds together that the kindergartners will observe growing in their classroom!

POE Day! 6th grade Language Arts students took part in a Socratic Seminar, practicing the art of thoughtful conversation. Students shared ideas, listened carefully, and engaged in respectful dialogue, even when perspectives differed.

8th grade students passed their math worksheets from classmate to classmate, building on each other’s thinking as they solved the next problem. There was plenty of laughter along the way…and lots of engaged mathematicians hard at work!

8th grade science students compared a map of Hudson with the fictional town of “Boomtown” to determine the best location for a new school. Students applied their knowledge of geography, weather patterns, and land features to make thoughtful decisions.

Encouragement with a twist of humor! Inspired by a student’s Gratitude Day reflection, 6th graders created pun-filled notes of positivity to share with the entire school community.

7th grade students brought together everything they’ve learned in this chapter to tackle their Math Team Challenge! Working in groups with assigned team roles (and three helpful “lifeline” cards!) students collaborated to show what they know.

The Maker Space is happening! These students collaborate on a Marble Run Challenge, trying to improve their record from last time!

Scam or no scam? Students sharpen their digital literacy skills in the Media Center with Mrs. Kingan, learning how to spot online scams, stay safe online, and be positive digital citizens.
