The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

Week of March 30, 2026

Congratulations to Peter Metoki for his award-winning essay writing, as part of the Stop the Hate contest. We are so proud of you!

A full house of 5th grade families joined us this week for our 5th to 6th Grade Parent/Guardian Orientation Night! From the moment they walked in, families were met with a warm, supportive environment - leaving feeling excited, reassured, and ready to begin their middle school journey.

Lights, camera, creativity! Digital Art students are bringing their ideas to life as they design and film their own stop-motion commercials!

6th grade Scientists are “Tracking the Disease!” …. collecting data to determine the source of the illness. Was it from the cafe, the zoo, the market, a picnic at the lake, or the restaurant?

We love our HMS Kitchen Crew! Their April Fools menu made us laugh!

Important Notes:

Upcoming ELA OSTs (Ohio State Tests):

On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14 and 15, 2026, HMS will be participating in Ohio’s Statewide Tests (OST’s) in English Language Arts for students in grades 6, 7 and 8.

All students should bring:

  • CHARGED Chromebook
  • Chromebook charger
  • A pencil
  • A book to read silently after testing
  • NOTE: No additional electronic devices other than Chromebooks are permitted per testing rules. Please reinforce with your child that cell phones and smart watches are strictly prohibited during testing. These devices should be turned off and kept in their locker or placed in the classroom cell phone holder.

As with every day, students will perform their best with plenty of rest the night before, a well-balanced breakfast that morning, and prompt arrival to school each day of the test. As a reminder, testing begins at 8:00am each day.

Future OSTs (Ohio State Tests) - Math and Science:

  • Math OSTs will take place 4/21 and 4/22
  • 8th Grade Science OSTs will take place 4/23
  • More information will be about these in a future newsletter

  • Recently there has been an increase in Chromebook damage at HMS. Please take this opportunity to remind your student(s) that Chromebooks should be properly cared for and are property of the school district.
  • Chromebooks should ALWAYS be in their district-provided protective cases. Willful and deliberate damage is not covered by insurance, which includes removing the frame, removing the keyboard faceplate, disconnecting the mic or camera, writing anywhere on the device, and more.
  • For more information about Chromebooks and insurance coverage, please visit https://www.hudson.k12.oh.us/departments/technology/11-insurance-information
