The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

Week of February 23, 2026

Hudson swept the "You Be the Solution" Akron/Cleveland Regional Challenge on Saturday winning first, second and third place! Coming in first place was our 8th grade team with Jonathan, Yi-Chuan, Kyson, and Harrison. Second place was earned by the 7th grade team with Jude, Jason, Jack, and Luke. And our third place team was one of the 5th grade teams from EWIS! A huge congratulations to all of our teams!

Testing water samples to identify contamination and determine water safety in 7th grade Science!

8th grade students collaborate to create a Slope Overview Poster in math class, bringing all of their learning together to share their understanding!

Students’ final electrical circuitry houses are on display in the 7th grade team learning areas. Their creativity and knowledge is really shining! And their faux VRBO listings for these houses showcased their learning of key scientific concepts, combined with scale modeling and creative writing!

Builders Club members packed 100 toiletry bags for individuals experiencing homelessness in Akron. After hearing from representatives from Haven of Rest about the real impact of their efforts, students got to work - filling each bag with essentials and a whole lot of heart.

What a beautiful choir concert this week! Our 6th and 7th grade choral students, under the direction of Ms. Platek, were phenomenal! 8th grade will perform next week with the HS choirs!

Congratulations and THANK YOU to our February Students Making a Difference! These students make our school a better place for others through their positivity, hard work, and kindness! We appreciate you!

Message from The Attendance Desk:

  • Leaving for Vacation or an extended absence?
  • Please have your child fill out an Advanced Absence Form, available in the office, no more than 2 weeks prior to their absences. This allows the teachers time to have their lessons available for the time your students will miss school.
  • Reporting or requesting Advanced Absence Forms earlier than 2 weeks ahead can lead to inaccurate attendance.

3/2 Wear Orange for Inclusion Day!

  • Students and staff in Hudson are encouraged to wear orange on Monday, March 2, as part of the Summit County-wide effort to kick off Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and promote community inclusion.
  • In addition, Summit DD has also partnered with the Akron Zoo again for Inclusion Day. Wear ORANGE and get FREE admission and parking Saturday-Monday, February 28-March 2! Get details about Inclusion Day at the Zoo!

Health Guidelines for School Attendance from our District Nurse:

Panorama Survey - 3/16 during Advisory:

  • In February, communication was sent by Jennifer Reece to families of students in grades 3-12 about our upcoming Spring Panorama Survey. Information from this survey provides us with valuable information about the effectiveness of our programming, helps us to create additional learning opportunities, and guides us in creating safe and supportive learning environments.
  • At HMS, we will be administering the survey during Advisory on Monday, March 16.
  • If you would like to opt your child out of the survey, but have not yet notified me this school year and received a reply, please email Kim Cockley, HMS Principal, via email at cockleyk@hudson.k12.oh.us by Monday, March 9. We appreciate you letting us know annually, because preferences and situations sometimes change. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Traffic Procedure Reminders:

AM drop-off notes:

  • Bus transportation is encouraged, to reduce the car traffic on our campus and on surrounding streets for our neighbors.
  • If opting to drop your child off in the morning:
    • Enter via Oviatt. Please do not enter from Franklin. (Franklin Street is exit only, during AM and PM HMS arrival/dismissal times)
    • Please pull up as far as possible toward the visitors spots in our circle, before your child exits the vehicle.
    • Please do NOT stop in front of the pillars, if you are able to pull forward further. This helps keep the traffic moving smoothly, for maximum efficiency.
  • And a HUGE Shout Out and THANK YOU to our morning Leaders and Greeters! These student volunteers have helped tremendously with our traffic flow and reminders in the morning! They are AMAZING! At times, though, they are unable to assist, so we kindly ask that you continue to follow the procedures even when you don’t see a student or adult helping in the circle.

PM pick-up notes:

  • Please enter from Oviatt.
  • The Pick Up Zone is the entirety of the sidewalk along the drive and throughout the circle.
  • The center lane (eastbound left lane) is for cautious bi-bass/continuous traffic to aid in overall flow.
  • Please pull forward as far as possible before picking up your child, to allow for safe flow of traffic.
  • Please do not use other parking lot areas to pick up your child, as this means that children are often walking directly in the path of oncoming traffic, including school buses.

As a reminder, our traffic procedures are located on our website, under For Families > Parent Dashboard > Drop-Off and Pick Up Procedures.

Thank you so much for taking note of these procedures. It requires everyone’s help to make this process go smoothly and safely, so THANK YOU!
