Week of 2/19/24
The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley
We are so proud of Vandy, who was named as a Finalist in the Maltz Museum Stop the Hate Essay Contest! Thank you for sharing your story, to inspire kindness in the world!
It's time to enjoy the cafe in French class! Students practice speaking and listening with their new vocabulary, in the role of server or customer in a French cafe!
Thank you to LifeAct for sharing with our PE/Health students about mental wellness, and important resources for keeping everyone safe and healthy!
Collaborative notes, in 7th grade Social Studies, as students research a realm from Medieval times! Learning about the Cathedral, Castle, Town, Monastery, and much more!
In art class, students are creating a collaborative Peace Quilt! Each student designs a square to share about themselves, highlighting something of comfort in their lives. Students included elements like a family pet, the smell of flowers, and a grandmother's apron. Beautiful stories through art!
The “Night of Rock” was phenomenal! So impressed with our incredible HMS bands…and their collaboration with the HS Wind Symphony! What a FUN show!!! The audience LOVED it!

2023-24 HMS Yearbook - Student Name
-
In our school yearbook, student names are typically printed as they appear on their birth certificate.
-
If the birth certificate name is OK to print for your child, you do not need to complete the form.
-
If you prefer that a different name appear in the yearbook for your child, please complete this Google Form by March 8 (for example, if your child is known by their middle name rather than their first name).
-
Thank you for your help with this as we create a book for our students that commemorates our school year together!

March Kindness Month
-
Throughout the entire month of March, our focus will be on kindness, empathy, and belonging which are themes of the book New Kid, by author and illustrator Jerry Craft, who will be visiting our school on March 19! Of course, our goal is that every month is kindness month at HMS! :-)
-
Check out our March Kindness Month schedule of events, including kindness-themed lesson plans for Team Advisory, themed dress-up days for Right to Read Week, and a day of reading/activities with New Kid on Empathetic Contributor Day (Friday, March 15) in preparation for the author visit.
-
A HUGE THANK YOU to our donors (including PTO, Kiwanis, Hudson League for Service, and the Maltz Museum) for grant funding to provide a copy of the book for EACH student! For graphic novels, this is especially important so students can interpret meaning from the text as well as the images. Students may then choose to donate their copy back to the school to benefit future students.
Panorama Survey - March 20 during FOCUS:
-
On February 15, 2024, communication was sent by Jennifer Reece to families of students in grades 3-12 about our upcoming Spring Panorama Survey. Information from this survey provides us with valuable information about the effectiveness of our programming, helps us to create additional learning opportunities, and guides us in creating safe and supportive learning environments.
-
At HMS, we will be administering the survey during FOCUS on Wednesday, March 20.
-
If you would like to opt your child out of the survey, but have not yet notified me this school year and received a reply, please email Kim Cockley, HMS Principal, via email at cockleyk@hudson.k12.oh.us by Friday, March 1. We appreciate you letting us know annually, because preferences and situations sometimes change. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Traffic Pattern Reminder - Enter via Oviatt only (NOT Franklin)
-
Please do not enter from Franklin Street (in the morning or after school). Our HMS entrance is via Oviatt Street, for drop-off and pick-up. This helps provide a smooth traffic flow around our circle at these times.
-
Franklin Street is EXIT ONLY during the hours of 7-8:00am and 2:00-3:00pm.
-
It takes all of us working together to help ensure our students' safety, so we appreciate your attention to this.
-
Thank you for your help in sharing this with anyone else who may drive or pick up your child.
HMS Staff Shout Outs:
- Has an HMS staff member made a difference for your child? We love to show appreciation for our amazing staff at HMS! Here’s an opportunity to share more personally if a staff member has made a difference, no matter how big or small. I will be sure to recognize their efforts individually and quietly.
